A must read for mature fans of mystery December 30, 2007 A intricately plotted, meticulously written book which has hanging over it and ends with D.I. Rebus' imposed retirement. Introspective for both the protagonist and the reader, as we reflect on our own lives and careers, the battles with office hierarchy, and the shadows of long-standing enemies. Superb for its genre, and for any novel, by any standard.
Super book! November 28, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
What initially drew me to this book was the setting: Edinburgh. I'd lived there once and wanted to see if this author--any author--did the city justice. I can happily say that Ian Rankin did. This story begins around the death of a Russian poet. It appears that it has been a random accident during a mugging, but soon more information comes to light and we're led down a great, frantic trail to find out who did what to whom....any why. The plot in this book FLIES and gives new meaning to the term "page turner." This is a crime novel, and ordinarily I'd warn people away from it, but this one's different. It's great and a lot of fun. If you enjoyed DA VINCI CODE, then this book will work for you. Also recommended are KITE RUNNER and LIFE OF PI.
I'm a huge Rankin fan November 18, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
So I was quite excited to come into possession of an advance readers copy of this book a few weeks ago. I have to keep mum as to how this happened but it is kind of cool to get to read it before the general public! I won't give anything away other than to say this is a fitting end to the series, and another great read. The story starts out with the death of a Russian poet who at first appears to have been the victim of a mugging. However after a little digging there is more here than meets the eye. Rebus soon fears he may have dug a little too deep. Its sad to see the career of Inspector Rebus come to an end, but what a ride!
Intriguing author and book October 27, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Normally don't read books of this genre, but this one intrigued me a lot. So much that I got past the hype and took it on. Not a single regret.
Plot moves as fast as anything can without being minimal. Great characters. Though they could have done with some enhancment and fleshing out. Still, I was satisfied with the author's effort. I wanted to know more about him as I'd not heard anything. So I looked him up.
And this blurb about the author: Born in the Kingdom of Fife in 1960, Ian Rankin graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1982, and then spent three years writing novels when he was supposed to be working towards a PhD in Scottish Literature.
His first Rebus novel was published in 1987, and the Rebus books are now translated into twenty-two languages and are bestsellers on several continents. Ian Rankin has been elected a Hawthornden Fellow, and is also a past winner of the Chandler-Fulbright Award, as well as receiving two Dagger Awards for the year's best short story and the Gold Dagger for Fiction.
Ian Rankin is also the recipient of honorary degrees from the universities of Abertay, St Andrews and Edinburgh. A contributor to BBC2's 'Newsnight Review', he also presented his own TV series, 'Ian Rankin's Evil Thoughts', on Channel 4 in 2002.
He recently received the OBE for services to literature, opting to receive the prize in his home city of Edinburgh, where he lives with his partner and two sons.
I like the book AND the author and would recommend this to anyone, along with the novel HELLBLAZER ORIGINAL SINS and HELLBLAZER TAINTED LOVE.
An Excellent End October 13, 2007 23 out of 23 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic conclusion to DI Rebus' police career. Rankin's plot is typically rich and complex with subtle twists, interesting characters and a remarkable conclusion. Rebus is in prime form; argumentative, opinionated, awkward, aggressive and ultimately inspired. Pitted against dubious Russian businessmen and politicians as well as his old nemesis Cafferty and various opponents within Gayfield Square Police Station, he investigates, under Clarke's authority, the seemingly related deaths of a dissident Russian poet and a local sound recordist. Rebus' method gets him into trouble with various people on both sides while the final solution only emerges very late on. The rivalry between Rebus and Cafferty is brilliantly done; both men are older and more circumspect but the strange combination of respect and contempt bristles on to a thrilling climax. What a brilliant book; read it now.
