5 out of 5 stars Addiction   November 14, 2008
The only bad thing about the OUTLANDER serie is that... there is not enough of them!

I tried to read slower to keep the last book longer... not an option, I HAD to know.

Looking forward to the next one, September 2009 seems too far :(

5 out of 5 stars Diana is the BEST Author - This series is a Must Read!   February 2, 2008
I just finished A Breathe of Snow & Ashes. I tried to slow down the reading just to make it last as long as I could, but like all wonderful stories, I just had to finish it. Now I'll just carry memories of Claire and Jamie inside until the next book comes out.

This is the sixth book in the Outlander series and wonderfully tells the story of Claire and Jamie and their family as they eke out a living in early North American life. It's not just a story of surviving as pioneers; it's a story of a family, with richly described characters and tells of their great love, trials and challenges. Many questions are answered and revealed as Diana skilfully writes the tale of Claire the time-traveller. It's true that Diana's talent for describing things in detail makes you start to view things differently.

I heard Diana speak at a book signing for her latest novels in the Lord John series and she is as much a pleasure to listen to as to read. What I loved best was her comment that she wanted to write a book about people that stay together and make a marriage work. I've been so sick of silly romances that are only about sex and getting married. Diana tells a story about long term relationships and the kind of intimacy that we all long to have.

Thanks Diana for another awesome read. We're all waiting eagerly for the next book in the series :)

3 out of 5 stars A Breath of Average.....   January 23, 2008
As a recent fan of the Outlander series, I have been avidly reading all the book in the series in the past year. I had high expectations of this book, and was feeling a tad let down when I finished.
There are are some good twists & suprises, some good character growths & story lines as usual & expected. BUT, it also seems like she took almost every character and felt the need to have something happen to them that you would never expect, or make them out to be someone you would never have thought they would be. The ending also seemed to NOT answer the question about the fire & deaths. There was nothing spectacular this time around.
Over-all, it was a decent book, not her best, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't buy the next one if and when it comes out.

Signed,
J's Wife

5 out of 5 stars Also a Canadian reader   June 7, 2007
I absolutely adore the Outlander series and am proud to say that I have brought many of my friends and co-workers on as die-hard fans. I have 2 copies of the series...one for me and one to lend. Funnily enough my own copies are the most worn as they have been read so many times. The only 3 negative comments I can make about any of her books is that they don't come out fast enough, there aren't enough of them and for 'Snow and Ashes' as usual I am left worried sick about what is going to happen to all the wonderful characters. I read solely for entertainment and enjoyment and find this series exciting, romantic and moving to the Nth degree. Her books are wonderfully researched and written with love. Try Sara Donati's books, also a great series...and watch for Claire in a cameo role! A friend has lent me the unabridged audiobook CDs and I tried listening to them in the car for my fairly short commute to work, but had to give that up as I would usually be crying by the time I got there! To hear the words read out loud as real conversations and thoughts makes the characters unbelievably human.
I will be buying the rest of them to me from me with love and a box of kleenex.

4 out of 5 stars Long, tedious yet still good   September 29, 2006

As usual, the characters of Claire and Jamie are so well drawn that it is impossible to put the book down. But, the story is somewhat patchwork (I believe she writes this way on purpose, though) and there is almost too much action for the period of time in which it takes place. I would have liked her to relate more of the story to what was going on in the outside historical world than taking the characters through all these crazy kidnappings, etc.

Hopefully her next book will take us into the Revolutionary War which should provide more of a historical background for the story.
