Not a big fan. April 21, 2002 I muddled my way through the first book, but the second one completely lost me. I think that Gabaldon's details, while incredible, end up losing the story after a certain point. Too many time-skips and back and forth. I couldn't pick up the book and immediately follow it. I found Claire had lost a bit of her spark in the future, and her daughter was a vile creature. It frustrated me to have the story jump back and forth between the current future and the past. I was also disappointed that the story skips ahead 20 years into their lives. Why? Did nothing good happen for 20 years? At any rate, I wasn't impressed. But again, I am a harsh critic of sequels. If you would like to continue in the series just because it's another book by the author dealing with the same characters, you'll probably like this. If you want an independent, engaging story you can immediately sink into without having to re-read the first, I suggest you look elsewhere.
A Pale Follow-up April 10, 2002 This book was a pale follow-up to the compelling "Outlander". Way too wordy, the editors could've easily shaved off 100 pages by taking out repetative or unnecessary descriptions (note to author: sometimes less is more). The main characters are just as engaging as in the first novel, but what really seemed to bother me was that nearly all of the secondary characters were described using variations of "plump", "round", etc, etc. Does the author really beleive that she needs to make her main characters that much more attractive by surrounding them with larger people? I found this quite offensive. The vast majority of the book is predictable and drags along at much too slow a pace. The saving grace was the short third act of the book wherein they return to Scotland and the action picks up. All in all though, I was very disappointed.
THIS WAS MORE DIFFICULT FOR ME TO FOLLOW April 2, 2002 I tried a few years ago to read Outlander but couldn't get into it. I started again a copule of months ago and loved it. But Dragonfly In Amber was harder. I bogged down a lot more with the detail of the battles, who was against who, who was pretending to be against who, etc. I tended to get confused. Not saying this is the author's fault! But I did find this more difficult to get through. But I LOVE Claire, especially Jamie. Who wouldn't want a man so devoted!?!
I want to go to Scotland now. March 19, 2002 Her first book was great Outlander. I didn't realize that i was reading a "romantic novel". I enjoyed it so much i bought this second book and i plan to read the rest of the series. The characters are passionate and highly likeable. I'm a guy and i really enjoy these books of Ms.Gabaldon.
Mesmerizing fastpaced read March 14, 2002 I could not put this book down.My wife started reading the series and told me that it took place in Scotland where my grandparents were born so that was enough for me to see why she loved it so much.Claire and Jamie just jump off the pages and into your living room with you.I feel as though I have been transported back to Scotland with them.I would highly recommend this book to anyone. The only thing that disappointed me was the fact that Claire and Jamie missed out on twenty years of their life together.Looking forward to the next book.
