5 out of 5 stars The Saga Continues   August 25, 2001
Thie is the second volume of what appears will be a six-volume story by a woman who is unfairly shelved with "romance" fiction in the bookstores and in the library. Diana Gabaldon is light-years ahead of most "romances" with this series, which involve time-travel, history, medicine, and a cast of thousands, headed by the most romantic red-headed Scot (Jamie Fraser)you've ever met! The books in this series can be read individually -- in fact I started with the fourth volume, Drums of Autumn, and was impelled by it right back to Volume One, Outlander. This is Volume Two, Voyager is Volume Three, Drums of Autumn, noted above, is Volume Four; and oh, joy, Volume Five, The Fiery Cross, is scheduled for publication this November. I rate all of these books at five stars -- they are the best read available in a long. long time. Keep 'em comin', Diana!

5 out of 5 stars SECOND IN AN OUTSTANDING STORY!   August 16, 2001
After Outlander, this was another happy surprise. It's not your typical historical romance. You learn something about Scotland in the 1800's too. The continuing story of Jaime and Claire is the real pull here. Its amusing, loving and tragic. All the characters are interesting. Things were tough in the 'old days'. This paperback is over 900 pages and you will whirl thru it! On to the next!

5 out of 5 stars Dragonfly in Amber   July 30, 2001
The entire series of Dianna Gabaldon's books is absolutely mesmerizing. This author is one of the most creative writers. This book as well as the others in the series are impossible to put down.

5 out of 5 stars Great Scot! What a Fabulous Series!   June 22, 2001
I absolutely love reading books that incorporate Scottish or English history with fiction. I had recently read the series of books written by Barbara Erskine, and I was desperate to find another series of fiction that would take me back into time again. It was by accident that I came upon Diana Gabaldon's series of books in a bookstore one day as I was browsing. I wasn't quite sure which book was the first in the series, but by luck I picked up "Outlander". After reading the blurb on the back of the book, I wasn't sure whether this was what I was looking for as I'm really attracted to the medieval times. But I took it anyhow. I'm so glad I did! I could not put the book down. Before I even finished the book, I went back to the bookstore to buy the second instalment (I didn't know which title was the 2nd book). As I was standing in the store going from book to book and back again trying to figure it out, a woman had been watching me. She approached me and raved about the series, and told me that Dragonfly in Amber was the next instalment I was looking for. She was a member of a book club that had read the entire series, and they had voted the series the best they had read, and in fact Dragonfly in Amber had been her favourite. Great! I couldn't wait to begin!

I just finished the book, and I absolutely loved it! Jamie and Claire are bold and sensual characters, and the historical accounts, locations, and adventures are fantastic!!!

I'm definitely looking forward to the remainder of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Oh my god... Fabulous!!!   June 8, 2001
I was at the library one rainy afternoon, trying to find something to read that would keep me occupied over the weekend - the forecast called for rain, rain and more rain. At this point(about 4 years ago) I had not yet heard about this book, the author or even the series. The reason I did pick up the book was cause I liked the cover. I know, I know, don't judge a book by it's cover, but let's be honest - a catchy, intreaging cover/title is a great marketing tool. I'm refering to the paperback version with the open cover that shows Clair and Jamie and the new world and the old world. Anyway, I took it home, and I don't think I got out from under the covers of my bed the whole weekend - I COULD NOT put this book down.

I refuse to read cover jackets or the back of the book before I start - I ususally like to just jump right in (try this sometime, it makes the reading experience that much more exciting) Remember, I didn't know at the time that this was book #2 in the Outlander Series. I just started reading about a woman and her daughter who go to Scotland... so when Clair discovers Jamies tomb stone and freaks, I freaked as well. Oh my god... this was promising to be a great story. I won't bore you with a play by play of my emotions as I continued to read, but let me just say that I was totally blown away. In the last line of the book, Claire basically gets told that Jamie never died. And that's how the book ends - and that, I thought, was the end end. I really and honestly thought that DG was just going to leave us hanging. That was the end of the story, period. Well, let me tell you that I was just about in a state of depression for about a week, until I picked up the book to return it back to the library and thought "OK, let's read the reviews on the inside pages" - Finally, me the idiot, finds out that there is a whole Jamie and Claire series out there. - Let's just say that I'm a big fan.

Seeing as how this was my first D. Gabaldon book, it remains my favorite. "Outlander" was also great although I found it a little repetative (remember, I had already been exposed to the Jamie/Black Jack Randall issue albeit a little backwards I know). "Outlander" and "Dragon Fly in Amber" remain two of my favorite books. "Voyager" was a great adventure story but "Drums in Autumn" just didn't measure up. I could really care less about Brianna and Roger - What I want is more of Claire and Jamie. I'm eagerly awaiting book #5.

Overall, this book, "Dragonfly in Amber", is fantastic. Diana Gabaldon's style of writing is riviting. I loved it!
