| Customer Reviews:
A book for anyone March 14, 2000 These reviews are very interesting. Several people refer to the magical experience that takes place between a "father and son." Other people refer to the "father and daughter!" Still others refer to simply "a father and a child." In fact, the dust jacket of the book says that the child is a little girl. It also says that both the author and illustrator were influenced by memories of walks in the woods with both boy and girl children. I think people see the story in terms of their own experience. Perhaps a father who read this book to his son sees the character as a little boy, etc. To me, part of the charm of this book is that you really can't tell from the pictures whether the child, all bundled up against the cold, is a boy or a girl. It really doesn't matter. The bond between parent and child is universal. This is a book anyone can enjoy, and make their own.
Both Story and Art Enchant February 8, 2000 I like this book and so do my children. Although it will have more appeal to fathers and sons, any parent and child can enjoy this story of the magical bond that takes place when a parent introduces their child to one of life's moments of wonder.Who among us doesn't remember wonderful moments when you and you alone were the focus of your father's (or mother's) attention in a special setting that created a life-long memory pleasently returned to again and again. That's the magic of Owl Moon where a little boy takes a long walk in the woods over new fallen snow with his father. They are journeying to, as his older brothers had done before him, find a great owl, if he can be coaxed from his high above throne where he rules the night. The story is simply told but carries all of the magic foretold by the setting. The water color illustrations are beautiful in their simplicity and convey the wonder of nature and the togetherness of father and son.
Great story, great picutures February 8, 2000 My 5 year old son loves this story and pictures...well, me too (the mother). The simplicity of father and son walking through the woods calling for owls...beautiful!
Winter Walk in the Woods October 27, 1999 Owl Moon is a magical story about a little girl going owling with her father on a cold winter's night. The illustrations in this book are very suitable for children, seeing that it did receive the Caldecott Award. Children will love to actually participate in this owling experience. This book is great for kids, as well as adults.
The Magical Experience of a Child Going Owling with Dad August 5, 1999 Jane Yoolen's descriptions and wonder far surpass those of the usual children's stories. She brings the excitment and magic of a child walking through the woods alone at night with dad and allows us to see how children can take something so simple and turn it into a night of quiet excitment and joy. I recomend this book to anyone who is a kid or wants to remember being a kid and the magic of it all.
