5 out of 5 stars A good follow-up   November 22, 2008

This was a good follow-up book to his 'power of now'. He goes a bit more in depth in this one I think especially when relating to his life prior to enlightenment - It makes him seem more ordinary and makes the enlightened state seem more accessible. Another book I found boldly more direct and easier was Keith Loys book Finding Reality 'Awakening to Spiritual Freedom' . These two books combined seem to cover all that is needed for a lasting effect!

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new here - not impressed at all!   November 2, 2008

When I first read this book it seemed interesting. It certainly seemed to be addressing many issues. But as I continued with my own research into spirituality and even psychology, I began to find it redundant with nothing new to offer. It helped me short-term. His philosophy had absolutely no long-term effect.

Someone who studied in Cambridge could not have arrived at these conclusions through mere epiphany. Tolle's ideas come from sources dating back 6000 years such as the Kabbalah although he twists his philosophy around it all.

He is using the mind to eradicate the mind itself as he focuses on 'the ego' and even, as he calls it, 'the pain-body.' What a ludicrous notion!

The 'ego is a G_d given gift there to show you compassion, understanding, giving and loving as fear is there to show you courage. Look closely at what is going through your mind and not just your 'thinking mind' in order to develop yourself while on this earth and in so doing, to help humanity.

I have had the opportunity to interact with many who follow Tolle's principles. In the end, they continue to exhibit an 'egoic' nature discriminating against those who voice a different opinion as if holding the entire 'truth' to the universe in their grasps.

Continuing on the Kabbalah thought, I cannot believe that Tolle has not heard of Madame Colette Simhah Aboulker-Muscat and Dr. Catherine Shainberg, Ph.D. who after studying with Colette and specifically studying 'The Blue School' philosophy, established 'The School of Images' in New York City in 1982. She has since written 'Kabbalah And The Power Of Dreaming Awakening The Visionary.'

Dr. Catherine Shainberg, through the Kabbalah and guided imagery, helps you to overcome distress and illness while living in our chaotic world. You will learn the unity of mind and body, mental and physical, and the therapeutic techniques of waking-dream therapy. It is not a disassociation of thoughts nor of the body although energy and spirituality are very much key components.

Although Eckhart Tolle achieves awareness through stillness, I find that he has nonetheless, and somehow, absorbed Colette's teachings, but again with a tremendous twist as he also weaves other teachings into his philosophy.

I recommend Dr. Shainberg's book any time, it is a good way to start especially if you wish to heal your emotional wounds - mind, body and soul. It helps far beyond anything Eckhart Tolle has ever provided. I have many more issues with Tolle's writings, but for now what I have detailed is sufficient.

Great message. The writing is a little on the arrogant side, but it flows, and it's message is very timely.

3 out of 5 stars Spirituality for depressed, introverted and childless people   September 23, 2008

Although Tolle put his finger on something important, namely that our ego has too much influence over our lives, he pushes this to an extreme where our ego becomes our worst enemy.

Living an egoless awaken life may be an interesting goal for an introverted childless man battling depression, as Tolle admitted he was, but it is not realistic for a parent with three children.

Read the Book of Secrets by Deepak Chopra instead. With Chopra, spirituality is not a quick fix to all personal and global problems but a layered process where you don't have to wage a holy war within yourself to deny a fundamental part of who you are, your ego.
