Minutes From a Dungeons and Dragons Campaign June 27, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Alhazred, though not without its excitement, has a very repetitious plotline. It reads like the minutes of a roll playing campaign, not an autobiography of a "mad Arab". I found that Mr. Tyson's frequent use of modern profanity or slang throughout the text to take away from the mystique of the book (nobody translating an ancient autobiography would use such words). I felt that Tyson's Necronomicon was a nice tribute to H.P. Lovecraft. Alhazred seems to be a quickly churned out, poorly edited attempt to capitalize on the Necronomicon's success. Mr. Tyson has evidently transferred from writing pop pseudo occult garbage into the trade paper fantasy market (and not very well might I add). I give two stars because the story was a very readable though poorly ended story. At least one hundred pages could have been removed from the book and been replaced with "and they lived happily ever after." Near as I can tell the final "campaign" put into the book was there only to give the book 666 pages.
