3 out of 5 stars Good read for nature-loving youngsters   February 20, 2008
I read this when I was a preteen and got it recently for my private library. It's written to be understood by a younger audience who are fascinated by all the things animals do. There are even frequent spelling and grammatical errors to emphasize the story being told from the main character's prespective, but there are lots of funny things for adults as well.

3 out of 5 stars Perhaps more interesting for boys than girls   May 1, 2007

I tried reading Owls in the Family to my 8-year old daughter, one chapter per night as a bedtime story. From all the wonderful reviews the book had gotten I expected it to be a fun book for us to read together.

Personally, *I* thought the book was cute, if perhaps not funny, and I enjoyed Mowat's descriptions of the prarie terrain, but my daughter had no interest in the book whatsoever. We stopped part way into the third chapter because she was simply bored.

I don't think it's because the main characters are male--we've read other books with male characters that she loved. But the simple nature of the story--boys exploring the prairie, looking for pet owls--did didn't appeal to her. Not dramatic enough, perhaps.

So I thought I would write this review to warn parents that the story may appeal more to boys than to girls, although I'm sure there are exceptions to that.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book that all should read!   October 24, 2002

This book got me hooked on reading when I was little. It is an excellent tale about the exploits of Wol, an owl who has been adopted by a Canadian boy. Wol gets into all sorts of trouble, pickign on the neighborhood animals. He is so lovable though! Weeps is a smaller and shyer owl that also gets into some trouble. This is a no doubt classic that you will want to read over and over again!

Owls In The Family [5 out of 5 stars] By two kid?s 9 and 8. This is a very good book. It?s about a kid named Bruce and his two owls. One of the owls name is Wol. Wol gets in to a lot of mischief. First he follows Bruce to school. And second, he discovers that owls weren?t meant to swim. Bruce finds another owl later in the book and he names him Weeps. This is a very funny book. They found owl after a storm called a Chinook. Bruce found him under some leaves and twigs. They found Weeps in an oil can. Two boys were throwing rocks at Weeps. Bruce came over and said what do you want for him. Wol brought home a skunk.
