Hard to put down. May 15, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've always enjoyed Wilbur Smith. His Egypt stories involving the magus, Taita, being some of the best historical fiction written. This is the latest in Taita's story. His "quest" is to seek the source of the evil that has rendered Egypt destitute and dying. Without giving away important plot points, the story is remarkably fast and captivating. There is more of the supernatural in this story than in previous offerings on Taita. Initially, I was reticent about this change in writing genre, but this works incredibly well. As with all of Smith's books, anyone can pick them up and find themselves acquainted with the characters in a short time. In order to fully appreciate the Taita story it is better to start at River God, The Seventh Scroll, Warlock and then The Quest. The ending leaves room for more of the Taita chronicles to come. I hope!
