Happy Ending to an Epic Tale. August 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Harry Potter is undeniably an epic tale. J.K. Rowling is absolutely brilliant in thinking up of this kind of world that just pulls the readers straight into the story. I mean, at age 17, I still fantasize about not being a Muggle, but a part of the wizarding world. Many unanswered questions were answered in this book, and the whole "Snape: good or bad?" debate came to a clean end.
There was a good balance of who dies and who lives, though the deaths of certain characters had me scream silently in disbelief. However, I felt like the ending was a bit childish... in a way. The first book was definitely aimed towards a younger audience. It was cute, in a way, compared to the more recent books. As the series progressed and the characters got older, the plotlines became much darker, and very harsh. I felt as if it wasn't a kid's book anymore, but an adult's. (which I loved.) The entire story of the seventh book wasn't like a children's book either... but the ending was. This kind of disappointed me a bit, but I couldn't think of a better way for the series to end, so I guess I was just expecting too much.
Overall, it was a spectacular finale to a wonderful series. What's more is that fans can fantasize about the lives of the Golden Trio's children at Hogwarts! ;)
A breathtaking finale to the most popular series in decades July 29, 2008 I think Daphne Durham said it all in a beautifully poetic way that encapsulates the serious nature of this final chapter in the lives of such beloved characters.
Great Storytelling to the End July 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The time has come. Harry's about to turn seventeen which means that all of the charms protecting him at the Dursley's house will disappear and he must leave Privet Drive before Lord Voldemort arrives to kill him. Needless to say, the first sixty pages of HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS are riveting and by the time the action slows, you're ready for a long deep breath. Anyone who's read the previous books knows that Harry's mission is to find and destroy the remaining Horcruxes that contain bits of Voldemort's soul, and then kill Voldemort. No easy task. The Dark Lord now controls the Ministry, the Giants, Dementors, Azkaban, and many others. Spies are everywhere and there's a price on Harry's head. But Harry's one clever--if not lucky--teenager and, with Ron and Hermione's help, he launches the most difficult quest of his life.
For a 607 page book, the story moved incredibly fast, and I couldn't put it down in many places. In slower sections, Rowling does a great job of showing Harry's anguish, impatience, frustration, and grief over those he's lost. Harry's mission prevents him from attending his final year at Hogwarts, so readers don't get to see other key characters as much, yet this only exemplifies Henry's sense of displacement and loneliness as the months drag on.
The ending was satisfying on many levels, though the epilogue was a bit disappointing. A conversation between seven or eight characters--many of them new--was hard to follow. There was no back story and almost no inner monologue to shed light on what had transpired with familiar characters since the final confrontation. Still, for Harry Potter fans, THE DEATHLY HALLOWS is a must read and it saddens me that the saga's come to an end.
An Enchanting finale January 20, 2008 I got this book as a " you're a great guy so I got this for you for no apparent reason" gift the weekend it came out and as the title of this review already tells you, it was simply remarkable and without a doubt the best book in the series!
From the beginning chapter with Voldemort and his followers planning Harry's death to the trio's hunt for Horcuxes to the final chapter where Voldemort finally meets his end, I was hooked. No matter how boring (which it rarely was) the scenario seemed, or how unimportant the event, it had me reading every word with very close attention and with the addictiveness that comes with entering the magical world, I was soon completed and felt like crying because it seemed to be over so soon.
I suppose the only negative comment anyone could make about the book was the end scene for it answered the few remaining questions readers had but gave a whole bunch of new questions unanswered. Otherwise the book is nearly perfect and a perfect addition to a Harry Potter fan's library, no matter how many books he/she has so far. If you haven't read a Harry Potter book yet and you love the fantasy genre, I highly suggest suggest you start, but if you want to read this right away, at least read book 6 before moving on to this one so you'll be able to have a better understanding of what's going on. Anyways hope this review helps you with your decision to buy this book or not, and if you do, happy reading!
