melting ice and liking it April 4, 2004 I don't know what to say. Sigur Ros has taught me what a powerful instrument the human voice can be. If you're obsessed with lyrics you will be disappointed... but if you are open to experience music in a new and different way then Sigur Ros is a group of talented adventurous beautiful rapscallions that will change something about you. If you ever have the opportunity to hear them live, do not pass go do not collect $200! It's up to you. The words mean nothing on their own. Just sounds -- sounds that will teach and change and entertain you. PS. Hi Bjorn thanks for the hub! Y'all rock!
Classy but Not January 27, 2004 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
Sigur Ros are a band that inspires even the indie cynics to gush in an incoherently brazen way. Words like masterpiece and timeless just seem to spew from their mouths. Not that I am especially inclined to disagree. Sigur Ros appeal to that film soundtrack, lush soundscape part of the brain that needs to be satisfied from time to time, the part of me that loves the lion king soundtrack, and I mean that in the best possible way. Untitled 1 or Vaka as its alias goes is a track that goes exactly where you expect it to go, you have an amazingly pretty piano and organ, and Jonsi in his typical atypically alien falsetto belting it out, it takes on an almost Amazing Grace type of vibe, I'll try not to use vibe in the rest of this review. Untitled 9 seems to be a remixed Vaka, or at least I've heard, and its almost better, maybe. Hard to explain. The videos are horrible, to put it bluntly. Slow motion homosexual parables aren't necessarily my thing, but one with such obvious and heavy-handed symbolism does me no favors. It's almost embarassingly self-conscious, well Vidrar Vel. Syefn is actually not bad, as background for the song, its kind of pretty, but you could probably put video of a guy collecting garbage and make it profound with a song like that to back it up. Vaka is also just a little obvious, post-apocalyptic imagery in a kind of hokey way doesn't seem to match the music, sadly. So the videos don't match the songs, at least they don't for me, but the songs are quality, as they almost always are with this bunch of artsy icelandic scumbags. So take your pick.
I would have payed $... for the DVD alone. October 15, 2003 As a previous reviewer so eloquently said: wow. Ever since I first bought "()" last year, "Untitled 1" has been one of my favorite songs of all time. It is so amazingly beautiful and emotional. The b-sides are ok, but I really wasn't expecting masterpieces. It's the DVD that makes this purchase more than worth it. I had no idea what to expect with the videos, but I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. They fit the music perfectly, and each one was heart-wrenchingly powerful. They all brought tears to my eyes. Sappy, but true. My favorite is the second one, which shows the difficulties (and small victories) of being a gay youth in a conservative Christian society. This one struck the biggest chord with me because I can completely relate. These powerful works of art are videos that the whole world should see. It ticks me off that America will rarely (if ever) see this type of brilliance on our televisions. Instead, we're stuck with mind-numbing booty-shaking. So if you have a brain, a soul, and depth of character, do yourself a favor and pick this single/DVD up.
I stand in awe... October 12, 2003 Although I've been a Sigur Ros fan since Von, and the band has grown and matured beautifully since their beginning, none of their music had in any way prepared me for the awe inspiring beauty of what Jonsie et al could create for the eye as well as the ear. These three videos are stunning works of art. After numerous viewings the hairs still stand on my arms and tears well up in my eyes. a couple of reviewers claim they may be distastefull or offensive,...In my mind, only to those so closed minded who don't or can't see all the beauty life and the world around us has to offer. I didn't think it could any better than the music of Sigur Ros, I was wrong.
I disagree with all of the other reviews... September 16, 2003 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
First let me just say that I consider myself the #1 fan of ( ). OK now that that's outta the way... I was very disappointed in this DVD. The CD was pretty cool, and that's what the one star is for, but the music videos on the DVD were terrible. When I listen to Sigur Ros I picture abstract and eretheral things, like weird or peaceful landscapes or romantic stories - not dancing down-syndrome people dressed as angels, and not children playing soccer (football). I wasn't really offended by the scene with the two boys, but I didn't really feel too good about it either. A music video should reflect what the director feels when he/she listens to the music. I didn't see any connection between these images and the genius music of Sigur Ros (except that the videos were in permanent slo-mo). Do yourself a favor and don't get it - or do Sigur Ros a favor and get it. Up to you.
