Don't waste your money on this one September 7, 2007 Let me start by saying I am an avid Sigur Ros fan. Their last 3 CD's are each memorable, particularly the majestic and haunting (). Their first effort VON however is an absolute mess, unless you like listening to an hour of bizarre sound effects, reminiscent of another complete consumer rip-off - Lou Reed's notorious 70's CD Metal Machine Music. On Von, there are only 3 tracks which even remotely resemble structured songs with any hint of melody, those being tracks 5, 9, and 11 - although 11 is spoiled by some cheap effects that could have been taken straight from the 50's Sci-Fi classic Forbidden Planet. When you have a credited song which is nothing more than a pause between two other tracks (track 6) and a final track which starts with 6 and a half minutes of dead silence, you know you're in trouble... If you make it through to the end of this CD you are a devout fan waiting for any redeeming feature. If you play it a second time, you're in need of a doctor's care.
Only for the 'tried, tested and true' fan... June 12, 2006 The first song, the band's namesake, does well to unnerve me. It's like submerging yourself into something unearthly and ghastly, like the screaming undead! Somewhat unsettling but it's definitely a stand-out track, then we move into an angelic ethereal chorus that is more like the band that I have come to know and love. But only for a moment, then it goes in various other directions, some loud and noisy, and others just background noise.
I think it was a great beginning for the band. Experimenting.. finding their way.. Some of it worked, and some of it.. you might say, is for the select few. It was more of an ambient / alternative / industrial experiment, post rock taken to the extreme perhaps? Anyway, there are some intriguing elements here but not enough to warrant regular listening I'm afraid.
But I'm still glad to have it in my collection..
Good but they have better... December 30, 2005 The title says all. Also this album is quite a bit different from their other works in my opinion. With the exception of ( ) as it tries to build moods and sci-fi landscapes more so than Agaetis Byrjun or Takk...I give this album three stars because it is really a matter of opinion after all. If you love noise, experimental, mood, or just obscure music in general by all means buy this album. Listen to it at night with a good set of headphones and let it sweep you off your feet with its great production. It really is quite beautiful at times; tracks 3 and 11 are great examples of what the album does right. However if you are iffy about Sigur Ros don't start here, go straight to Agaetis Byrjun and make up your mind with that, if you don't like Sigur Ros -why are you reading this?- this will certainly not win you over and will come across as pretentious garbage, and a waste of an hour twelve of your life. I will end this by quoting the reviewer from Dust Magazine: "Von is, in a sense, an ultrasound view of the unborn Sigur Ros - it's almost fetal, an abstracted and vague representation of what would come later". I think the reviewer hit it on the head, the cover of the album itself shows this literally. Good but they have better.
