3 out of 5 stars Hmmm... neither good nor bad.   October 4, 2007

First of all, the interface in Microsoft Office is excellent. It looks great and will help you get things done quicker - but for the expensive price of even the cheapest version, you're better off settling for the free OpenOffice suite which has a more traditional interface that you are probably used to if you've used previous versions of Microsoft Office or Corel WordPerfect.

I recently purchased Windows Vista and Office 2007 Home. When dealing with files saved under Word 2003 I had several instances of 2007 being unable to reconvert the temporary file word uses while editing a document back into a word file, corrupting the file and causing word to crash. Word did not allow me to recover the document and continued to do this to a number of other important files, without a chance for recovery. My documents are to important to trust to Microsoft's blunders. I dumped Office and I now use the free Openoffice suite. Thanks for nothing Microsoft.

5 out of 5 stars Best Version of Office Ever   July 19, 2007

Microsoft finally seems to have gotten the best word processing package out there right!
There were so many improvements that there's just no way to list them all. However, I will say that adding headers and footers has never been easier, and the new 'intuitive' spell-checker certainly helps with catching words that are spelled similarly now by taking a look at the whole paragraph instead of just the word. Therefore, those silly mistakes where you might have spelled there instead of their are easier to catch. The menu systems have been re-vamped entirely and designed with better ease of use in mind, which is great for new users. But it might not be as easily accepted for power users of previous generations of Office, mostly due to the fact that everything has basically been scrambled, renamed, and completely re-ordered. This can be quite frustrating for people who are used to having things the way they've always been and like it that way. But the good news is that most of the common keyboard shortcuts appeared to still be funcional and the same.
Also, in regards to the new menu that was renamed to 'the ribbon', I'd like to point out that I didn't find things too hard to find within the first use, and right-clicking on everything and clicking on things I'd never seen before finally brought me into the menus and options I've always been familiar with, even though they were designed and laid out differently.
I highly recommend this software package to anyone who needs more from a word processing package than just the simple paragraph here and there and basic household budgeting.
Lastly, I'd like to point out that there is a pdf plugin for this package since I feel that is a very important step forward and worth mentioning. It's from Microsoft, and it can be downloaded from their site should you choose to add it, eliminating the need for purchasing a separate software package to write decent pdf files. But I'd also like to add that I don't know why it simply wasn't included in the base install of the program like all the other Word Processing packages out there, including the free ones. I was rather disappointed about that unexplainable oversight, since it almost seems like a step backwards.

4 out of 5 stars great if you are using all the programs of office   May 3, 2007

the price is right if you are using word, excel, powerpoint, and the other included programs. Has always this is a top notch program though many microsoft bashers will disagree.
I used the program on a friends laptop and it ran smooth has always. THough i personally wont be buying it has i am not in school or working in such a job which i need anything other then the Microsoft word. Paying almost 200 dollars for just microsoft word is kinda crazy when there is a few freeware programs out there though they lack a good spell/grammer check.
If your a student its an awsome and powerful tool and well worth the money. and once you get learning excel its an awsome tool for household budgeting and chart making.
