Funny September 23, 2001 A classic for all the family to laugh with.
Funny, funny, funny..... August 27, 2001 I bought this tape for my 70 year old father who remembers seeing Victor Borge live. We both laughed out heads off! Tears were streaming down our faces as we watched and then re-watched the tape. For my dad, it brought back many memories; for me, I just loved the timelessness of his humor. It is truly refreshing to hear some REAL COMEDY without all the swearing.
Genius at work, tape could be better July 7, 2001 Victor Borge's work is incredible, and this tape is a compilation of some of his finest bits (See end of this review for a list). Unfortunately, unlike the tapes you rent at the video store, this tape is in the grainy EP mode, so Borge is not presented as well as one might have wished. The material rates a 5, but the EP speed rates this tape a 2. If the nonstandard EP speed had been listed so that the buyer could choose their own personal price/quality trade-off, then that would have given it a 3 or 4. Introducing Mozart............ My Favorite Barber............ Introducing Marilyn Mulvey............ Aria from "Rigor Mortis" by Joe Green............ The Timid Page Turner............ Phonetic Punctuation............ Inflationary Language............ Sahan Arzruni with the "2nd Rhapsody" by Fliszt............ Salieri Opera (sometimes called Mozart Opera)............ Danish Lullaby.
Not quite the best, but it'll do. June 19, 2001 The 2 funniest comedian-musicians of the 20th century were Victor Borge and Danny Kaye. Whereas the former relied heavily on understatement--teasing the viewer with the expectation of a performance that never seems to unfold, the latter was so free in sharing his prodigious talent that he risked being taken for granted. The common denominator between the two entertainers was a love of language, a penchant for word play and a delight in exposing the inconsistencies of the grammatical-semantic properties of English.Borge is at his best when he applies his facility with languages to the language of music. But comedy "in" music as opposed to comedy "about" music requires a relatively sophisticated, knowledgeable audience. As time went on, Borge relied more and more on visual humor, slapstick and "dumb" jokes, as is documented by this video recording of a concert late in his career in Minneapolis. And as dumb as it frequently can be, the humor succeeds because of Borge's persona. We know he's a polished, graceful pianist, that he has intellectual pedigree, and we sense an air of aristocratic gentility not to mention cosmopolitan urbanity. Consequently, if he can reduce himself to some of this material, we sense that we're "released" to enjoy it fully even if occasionally "in spite of ourselves" In sum, this tape nicely represents late Borge, but it's only one performance, and to call it the "best" is misleading.
hilarious March 4, 2001 I couldn't stop laughing about this video when I was watching it! You can't keep a straight face during one moment of it! The WHOLE family will love watching this. It's a great movie to watch over pizza on a Friday night!~ The picture is a TINY bit fuzzy but not enough to stifle your enjoyment of it. It's great! If you've never watched Victor Borge before ( as I hadn't before I bought this) you will absolutely love it. I agree with what someone else said. Victor Borge should be a household name!!~ This video is a wonderful tribute to the late Victor Borge.
