The Hillier Manual of Trees and Shrubs June 27, 2002 50 out of 52 found this review helpful
The book has all you need to know about trees and shrubs for in your garden, they are listed alphabetically with a miriad of symbols explaining the particular plants needs and wonts. The main drawback of the book is that it hasn't any pictures thus depriving you the idea of what the plant could look like in your garden, words can only describe so much. The book has many new trees/shrubs not included before, but what do they look like ?! Apart from the lack of photography the book is be an invaluble guide on the subject.
The verdant Inner sanctum January 7, 2001 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
The tree and shrub (but also climbers/conifers/bamboo/and more) Gospel by the famous nursery since 1972. Revised and reprinted endlessly - and necessarily naturally! For the professional and enthusiast, though this is text only! Cross-references, dates, and very specific information, like what bamboo flowered when and thus worth growing or not...
One of THE key reference guides for the professional November 28, 1999 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
While architects may need pictures, this guide is produced as a serious reference work for the horticulture/design profesional.invaluable.
A very disappointing book, limited in scope and value November 10, 1999 11 out of 18 found this review helpful
As an Architect, I found this reference book to be of very limited value. It has no photographs or sketches other than the one on the jacket, nor does it give useful details about the plants, such as mature height, width of crown, radius of root spread, demand of water, preferred type of soil, etc. This book is a disappointment.
