5 out of 5 stars Contented Dementia   August 22, 2008

I have never felt moved to write a review of a book before, but Oliver James has produced a book which I think is unique in the world of dementia today - he has explained in a very clear and readable way how to provide 24-hour Wraparound Care for Lifelong Well-being for someone with dementia. I had heard of Penny Garner's marvelous work with SPECAL in Burford and am thrilled that Oliver's book allows these methods to be available to all. Contented Dementia provides tried and tested methods which help families and carers, and lays out a path of hope that the future need not be full of doom and gloom. When I told people that my sister was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease at the age of 57, they would draw back in horror at the thought of her inevitable decline and misery. Well, the physical decline is inevitable but the misery for her or her family is not. I had only been able to be her main carer for a matter of a few weeks but, even in that time, I found all the techniques worked to provide her with a sense of well-being, and provide me with the knowledge that I was doing the right thing for her. Her move into a care home was seemless as I followed all the points in Chapter 13. I could not have coped without SPECAL and this book. Buy it.

[ASIN:0091901804 Contented Dementia: 24-hour Wraparound Care for Lifelong Well-being]]

I heard oliver James interviewed on You and Yours last Thursday and came straight back to the office and ordered this book from Amazon. It arrived the next day and by the end of the weekend I had read it and sent one to my father!

I work with older adults with dementia and my mother has vascular dementia. I went over to Burford several years ago to hear about SPECAL from Penny Garner, the combination of her work and Oliver Jame's clear and accessible interpretation of her ideas is a magical combination.

This is the best 'bible' for carers that I have come across a 'must have'for carers and staff alike.

A fantastic contribution to Dementia care well done to you both!

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing change   August 15, 2008

A fantastic book with so many tips. My mum has dementia and we realise we have been doing all the wrong things. This book has given us a really positive approach to the disease. If you only read one book on dementia make sure it is this one. So much negative press about dementia but this book really opens a door to a more positive approach.

5 out of 5 stars Constructive helpful advice for those assocaited with dementia   August 14, 2008

How do we cope... how do we respond... how do we help those we love who experience dementia? This book gives sensitive guidance on how to help those with degrees of dementia by our words and actions, to make their lives more contented. For us it's early days, for us this is the first real vehicle for constructive help.

5 out of 5 stars a happy partnership   August 11, 2008

Oliver James and Penny Garner make the perfect partnership. Oliver James' clear and compelling writing captures the energy and enthusiasm of Penny Garner. He clearly explains her positive and innovative approach to dementia which makes it immediately understandable. I was sceptical at first but have tried her method with my mother and it works.
