Precious detects again!! September 13, 2003 63 out of 64 found this review helpful
Mma.Ramotswe returns in "Tears of the Giraffe" the second novel about the exploits of "The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency". This is an heartwarming pleasurable read.Mma Ramotswe is the only female detective in Botswana, she solves her cases using common sense and a razor sharp intelligence. As Mma. Ramotswe states "Suspicious? Call the No.1 ladies Detective Agency. We find things out...." In this book Precious Ramotswe is engaged, has promoted her secretary to assistant detective (with sucessful results) and has accidentally acquired two children. Each chapter tells us a different tale from the agency and by the end all of the mysteries are solved. I enjoyed this book as much as the first and again it tells us a little more about life in Botswana, a country of tradition and warmth where you may call everyone "brother" or "sister". This is not just a detective story but it is also a voyage through Africa that is told with humour, warmth and great respect for its peoples.I would recommend this book wholeheartedly along with all the others in the series....
Back to Botswana! September 7, 2003 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
...and another serving of Precious Ramotswe. Just as, if not more enjoyable than 'No.1', with new characters, insights and stories - but the same razor sharp wit and tenderness.
More from my favourite Lady Detective August 27, 2003 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
If you loved No 1 Lady Detective Agency you'll love this. Simple, heatwarming stuff. Mma Ramotswe is back with more mysteries to solve, more tea to make, and this time with a husband to be and 2 children adopted from Orphan Farm. Gorgeous stuff.
A real taste of Africa June 3, 2003 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
We loved this book, the first of Alexander McCall Smith's that we have read. It is an intriguing story, it convincingly reflects life in post-colonial Africa seen as from an African point of view, and has a marvellous cast of characters. A series of sub-plots are cleverly woven into the story which revolves around a decade-old disappearance of a white voluntary worker. Morality and truth as virtues, and conversely the "crimes" of immorality are interestingly explored and there are tiny touches of prejudice and politics which serve as little reaches for reality in an almost magical setting. We both re-read the book as soon as we had finished it the first time! We look forward to reading more from the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency!
Gorgeous, gentle books May 21, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am totally besotted with the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and its sequels - McCall Smith brings great tenderness and gentle wit to his writing. Precious Ramotswe is the most engaging addition to the world of detection, though I think it is a crime to categorise them as 'genre' books. I think the thing I like most is that there is a sad underside to so much that happens, but there is nothing sentimental or contrived about any of the books. This is my favourite in the series - but you can't read it without reading all the others too.
