The perfect book for serious falconers May 30, 2003 20 out of 21 found this review helpful
I haven't been able to put this book down since receiving it. For anyone interested in providing the best care for their bird this book is a must. The subjects covered include a detailed insight of the biology of the bird of prey, extremely important for understanding why a bird behaves in the way it does and how to work with and get the best out of a magnificent creature which can never be referred to as domesticated. All aspects of care and training are covered, along with interesting information about falconry throughout the world both past and present. Understanding the Bird of Prey will be of interest to both those who are merely enthralled by the amazing ability of the falcon to fly at incredible speed with deadly accuracy and also to the falconer who wants to get the most out of their bird when hunting. For the experienced falconer there is information on breeding, adverse publicity and legal matters. There is even information on hawking dogs and the exciting practice of hunting in groups. Truly a wonderful book which is a must for all interested in this truly rewarding, environmentally friendly past time.
Time will prove this to be one of the all time classics! January 3, 2000 21 out of 22 found this review helpful
Dr Nick Fox is one of the World's leading breeders of birds of prey and has assisted conservation organisations with the breeding a release of endangered birds of prey. Nick Fox is also considered to be one of the leading falconers in the UK today, specialising in rook hawking. This book takes the reader through the biology of birds of prey, their breeding, hunting and the training of raptors for falconry, the most noble of all field sports. The book draws on years of experience and research and gives a view of raptors from both the captive and wild aspects. Any serious Falconer/Austringer should read tihs book. However, don't just borrow this essential source of reference, buy it and keep it at hand. In fact, purchase before any other book on the subject!
