The Owl who was afraid of the dark March 9, 2004 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I read the book when I was at school, my father was cleaning the attic and came across the original version - a little tattered and torn. This book was my all time favorite as a child, I am now 30 years old and saw Amazon advertising a new 2004 copy. So I had to order it, and cannot wait to read the book again. As an adult I am sure this book will be just a awesome as it was when I was little. I seriously recommend this book to everyone of all ages!! 5 stars for Plop!!
Fantastic Book For Children ! September 10, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This was the first book I ever borrowed from the junior library when I was 5 (I'm now 37 !) and I loved it. When we went back to the library I picked it up to borrow it again and my Mum explained to me that you were supposed to pick a different book to read, but I liked this one so much I wanted to read it again. A beautiful book which I hope one day to read to my own children...
A baby barn owl in a giant of a story December 2, 2002 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
When I was young I read lots of books, and some stayed with me more than others. More than just a memory, Plop and his adventures actually lodged themselves in my brain and never left. I was petrified of the dark as a youngster, and this book went a long way to helping me realise I wasn't going to perish each time the lights went out. It's a simple, atmospheric story with great characterisation and the occasional wry remark that any adult reading to a child will appreciate. I've only go about 3 books left from when I was very young, and this is the one I'll rescue if the house is going up in flames.
Superb story, beautifully written and utterly memorable October 16, 2001 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
Probably one of the best stories ever written. Plop is a baby owl who is afraid of the dark and his parents are desperate to make him accept his position in life as an owl and fly at night. He is sent out to meet a variety of characters: a boy scout, a little girl and an old lady among others, all of who provide a different view on the darkness. Nevertheless, it is only when Plop meets a night-prowling cat that he truly comes to understand his destiny. A delightful story that treats animals as animals (okay, so they talk; but the animals behave like animals) and which is told in a simple but moving way. I have always loved this book and still read it on a regular basis, over 30 years since I first met it...
*THE* childhood book September 1, 2001 For whichever child has ever been afraid of the dark. I have been talking about this book for years to my friends. Amazon is the only place I have ever found it! I know that in 20 years, my nephew will tell his friends about it - I can still remember how much it made me laugh when I was 5! Long live Plop...
