5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY FUNNY AND BRILLIANT   December 6, 2007
The Real Gorbals Story is even better than the books No Mean City, and Growing Up in the Gorbals. It is an interesting unusually brilliant piece of work by a true Gorbals boy. No-one but Macfarlane could have written this book as he is an extremely gifted racontour who grabs your attention form the very first paragraph. I could not put this book down as it is such a compelling read. I have bought copies to send to my old Gorbals friends all over the world and the feedback is they all love it. Quite simply an extremely well written piece of nostalga that will soon become a legend with Glasgow folk

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely brilliant book about the old Gorbals. Amazing!   December 6, 2007
This book is by far the best ever written about the old Gorbals. Colin Macfarlane grew up there as a street kid in the 1960s and he describes all the drunks, the hardcases, the gangs and gang members, the crumbling tenements, the boozers, the flymen, and the honest working people who made up the community. This tome beats other books on the old Gorbals by a million miles. Macfarlane's story is full of twists and turns that have you turning each page with great expectations. He also, for the first time, captures the maginificent sense of humour and patter that existed and it is hard not to have a good old fashioned belly a laugh at the patter and goings on. Macfarlane, although explaining in the book that he left school at 15 with a limited education, is also a great writer and compelling storyteller. This stupendous unique biography really is a must for anyone who grew up in the area or for those who have wondered what it was really like to live in the notorious Gorbals. It's an instant classic of our times.
