Garmin Nuvi - A good entry level GPS December 3, 2008 I use the Garmin 250 for my job, I do a lot of travelling up and down the country. The Nuvi is quite a bit smaller in size than other Garmin's with a little more care taken on style. Its quite light and solidly built with a large widescreen. Getting into position and mounting in the car wasn't as complicated as I thought it might be.
The GPS is very easy to set up and the user interface is again very easy to understand and get going.
The maps themselves are easy on the eye and your route is diplayed with a thick red line thats easy to see on a glance. the only problem I have with the thick red line approach is it tends to mask busier junctions (where a lot of lines suddenly appear on the map). Voice commands however are perfectly clear and precise and if you're in doubt with the map you can rely on the aural instructions to clear things up. The Nuvi could have benefited from further instructions, such as the nearest petrol station (you have to rely on icons).
The Nuvi comes with a few added extras such as a currency converter, city guides and more supplied on the SD card.
Overall the Garmin Nuvi may not be the ultimate GPS system but for the lower price it offers a no frills approach with an easy to use Nav system.
No frills, but it works November 20, 2008 I paid just over 80 for my Nuvi (including postage) and I could not be more pleased. Yes, it is basic compared to some, but it works and is simplicity itself to operate. The windscreen mount is first-class - solid as a rock and easily removed without leaving a tell-tale mark. For the money I doubt this could be bettered and even included European mapping. Highly recommended.
Garmin Nuvi 250 Satellite Navigation System With European Mapping November 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm caught between a rock and a hard place with this. Overall I am pretty pleased with it. But sometimes it can't make a distinction between 'turn left' and 'keep left'. For example, on a jagged bend it will tell you to 'turn right', even though you are following the same road. And instead of 'turn left' onto a minor road it will tell you to 'keep left.' And sporadically tries to send you the wrong way up one way systems! But functional overall, as long as you acknowledge it doesn't know all there is to know.
The plus points: Easy to use. Good value - compared to other UK & Europe options very reasonably priced. Easy navigation - on screen details is good and voice commands clear. Great built in info.
I'm pretty sure that as we use it more, we'll get used to it, but for something you can pick up out of the box, plug in, and use, pay the extra and get a Tom Tom. Or save your money and use streetmap.
Disappointing November 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Used it twice on long journeys and let down both times. Once it was over a quarter of a mile out on the address and the second time it navigated me on to a minor road and then kept saying recalculating before freezing. People I know with a tomtom seem to have less trouble. On shorter journeys it has been more accurate. This is my first sat nav and I am not impressed.
