5 out of 5 stars Rockferry   August 14, 2008
This album sounds like something amy winehouse would do but duffy's album is a bit more jazzy best tracks are mercy warwick avenue serious stepping stone and hanging on too long the only bad thing about this album is that it's too short 10 tracks only can't wait for her next album overall i give this album a 10/10 must buy! if you liked this album buy Frank (Deluxe) Back To Black: Deluxe Edition you'll love them both! oh yeah the next single is stepping stone.

3 out of 5 stars A bit Dusty but Amy won't be troubled...   August 9, 2008

First outing for the Welsh lass is impressive, when you consider she was plucked from the beginnings of her live career at the time.

The style is unashamedly Springfield-esque (though weaker vocally), with production borrowing heavily on Phil Spector influence. Songs as if directly from the Gamble & Huff or Bacharach songbooks. Lots of jangly Rickenbackers and strings, excessive use of tambourine, tremolo and spring reverbs - Hey it's '64 again.
Winehouse does it better and brings an extra bottle to the party (just don't drink if hers has already been opened.....)

Credit where due for the flavour but left badly exposed when challenged, (or tries a bit of rapping - see #7Mercy !)Duffy deserves the recognition received so far but will need to move the game on to keep up with the expectations.

Favourites? Delayed Devotion and the obligatory single Warkwick Avenue, Other passages will leave deeper searching questions, with Rockferry (I suspect) responsible for much of the polarising of opinions. Get a gang of mates together and try the Marmite test with this to see if you can get better than 60/40 either way.

Ultimately one for the serious Pop collector rarher than Music collection. Play it on da pod and let 'yer hips sway....

2 out of 5 stars Great voice, not so great album.   August 6, 2008

I heard 'Mercy' and I loved it; I still do. I waited for her album to be released, and was ultimately disappointed. Her voice is fantastic, but the sound of the album is too samey. The standout tracks are:

Mercy
Stepping Stone

Apart from that, it's all a bit boring and samey. Her lyrics and vocals are great, it's just the music that needs to be more upbeat. Still worth a try if you like 'Mercy' - but but warned - the album sounds nothing like the single.

Duffy is just this years generic pop sensation whose sales were once again manufactured by the media and advertising just like last years generic pop sensation, and the one before that, and the one before that etc. etc.

This album is as dull and drab as you would expect from the latest pop fad.

I really wish the sheep would stop giving in to the music industry and just buying anything they are told to.

I think they should stop giving names to the latest fad and just give them serial numbers instead cus they are all exactly the same!

Serial No. 576 aka duffy
Serial No. 985 aka Amy winehouse

etc. etc.

4 out of 5 stars Great for winding down and relaxing   August 2, 2008

I really like this album. I find Duffys husky voice relaxing, great for winding down at the end of the day. Sort of a 60's feel with noughties lyrics, nice.
