Pity June 7, 2008 26 out of 29 found this review helpful
Like several office users reviewing Office 2007 I have just put my hands to my head in despair at having to learn something that was easy back in Office 4.2, let alone 2003. Apart from writing a simple letter, if I want to do anything in the way of formatting, or adding autotext I have to trawl the help files. I gave up after and hour and have gone back to my own laptop. We use Office 97 - 2003 and this is not a problem: I use Mac, Windows and Linux and I have come to the conclusion after trying to use Office 2007 that I might just have purchased my last Microsoft product. Open Office is limited, but it works, Office 97 is familiar and now unsupported, but it works: I don't want to learn a new system. If, like me, you prefer the familiar, don't bother to buy this product, it's not worth it. If you are new to the whole thing, you might be interested in investing the time to learn how to use it, but if you only want simple spreadsheets and word-processing, why pay at all - get open office. I'm not an MS critic, ordinarily, but this product is like a new car with a steering wheel at the back - it might look like a porche, but it don't drive like one!
Waste of money - stick with 2003 June 5, 2008 17 out of 20 found this review helpful
I have been trialing Office 2007 for my business for 3 months. So far I am very disappointed and have NOT upgraded the other 12 people to this version (are you listening MS?). It is expensive to buy and offers absolutley no major improvement. Some key irritations are: - If you have user 2003 then the new navigation is more complex and difficult to learn - It is slower than 2003! (I have a top spec PC) - The default file extension is different (ie docx) making it imcompatible with past versions unless you download a fix - Excel screws up 2003 files! - I am a major word user - processing large and complex business documents with style sheets etc. All the bugs are still there.
I am in the process of moving my company to Open Office which is free and does enough that the average user will need.
Do not buy unless you are desperate.
Ribbon... eww... May 31, 2008 22 out of 25 found this review helpful
The ribbon "feature" is what had me request to go back to 2003 at work. I don't need 5 gazillion styles in my menu, I never use them. Nor does anyone else I know. It's especially bad in Word. If this "Ribbon" were customizable, great. But it isn't. You're stuck with what Microsoft deems essential -- not you. MS, believe me, Styles are not what I deem essential to have up at all times in rather wide buttons for each one. They are better served in a dropdown list as they used to be. This isn't so much a case of not wanting to learn a new menu, it's a case of being unable to customize a large amount (LARGE amount!) of screen space. That doesn't exactly enhance productivity. Frankly, the only thing worth having seems to be OneNote, but if that's truly the only thing you consider it for... www.evernote.com has an alternative. There is a reason so many people move from Word / Excel to Open Office, and 2007 is one of them. Powerusers will most likely not enjoy the new version.

This version is no better or worse than microsofts other dross. It is a pity I have to have it for the kids school work.
I agree... May 16, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have being using office and its components since the dawn of time, and I started using 2007 because the older versions are so diffiult to find now.
I wanted to test it before distributing it across our business, but having submitted myself to it, I refuse point blank to inflict this misery on my users (which is why I am on Amazon looking for an older version!).
All the comments below are valid, backwards compatibilty is rubbish, finding anything takes an age.
I *am* getting used to the stupid telly tubby ribbon thing, but .....
Don't try using anything but the simplest of headers and footers (remember the good old days, when every section could have a different header/footer, if that's what you wanted?). After 4 hours I gave up and used open office instead.
The same goes for watermarks - I wanted page 1 (my cover page) to have no watermark, and the suceeding pages with a watermark. There is a wonderful article on the MS website on how to acheive this - unfotunately it doesn't seem to work. I resorted to 2 documents, one with wm and one without!
Please release me from this torture! If I can find a copy of Office 2000 for sale I will die happy.
