Product Description Alex MacLeod’s virile physique, fearsome reputation, and renowned fighting skills have helped him master to perfection the role of a hardened mercenary. On a secret mission to protect his clan, he must keep his true purpose well hidden. But his dangerous endeavor is threatened by a beautiful woman he saves from outlaws, never dreaming she will appear at court and put his plans in jeopardy.
Meg Mackinnon needs a strong husband by her side to defend her clan’s holdings, but her search has been hampered by burning fantasies of the midnight rescuer whose smoldering blue eyes and raw sensuality left her breathless. Alex pretends to be a mercenary with no loyalties, yet he is clearly much more. As Meg challenges Alex to reveal all his secrets, the stakes grow perilously high, especially for the bold woman who dares to unmask a highlander.

Enjoyable July 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Meg MacKinnon has to marry in order to defend her clan's holdings. Faced with a deadline to achieve marital bliss, she heads to court in search of a husband. Alex MacLeod must keep his identity and purpose hidden. Too bad for him that Meg recognizes him as one of the men who aided her and her mother during a roadside attack.
Ms McCarty does a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. Meg and Alex are both strong, very likable, but not over powering.
I did feel there were times when the story bogged down with details and I rolled my eyes at a few phrases. But, the author did stay focused on the plot and kept the action moving.
This is my first read of this author and I have already scribbled a note to myself listing the title of her next book to go in my tbr pile.

Highland Keeper July 23, 2008 Court Intrigue, battles, revenge and a healthy dose of lust and love are the ingredients in Highlander Unmasked. This novel also works thanks to the two leads Alex and Meg.
Alex is at King James's Edinburg Court to route out information about the King's plan to transplant lowland Scots into the Highland Islands. Since Alex's clan hails from Skye, he knows his island is at risk. Alex is deep and a worthy hero in every way. He is a champion fighter who has been living as an outlaw. He was imprisoned by his enemy, watched those with him suffer and die, and has a load of guilt and resentment from the past.
Meg's first encounter with Alex is when he rescues her from brigands. She and her mother are on their way to court also. Meg must find a man to marry. She has been keeping the clan together since her father's illness. She has an older brother with some special needs and needs a man that will take on her clan but also be sensitive to her brother and his position as Laird.
Meg is surprised that Alex does not admit he was her savior and knows he is up to something at Court. She is very drawn to him. He is strong in mind, body and spirit. She has been strong for so long that she enjoys the rest she feels when she is with him. I found this to be a wonderful characteristic in Meg. She knew her mind and was able to be vulnerable.
Meg feels like Alex is her match but she is wary of him. He is adamant about not marrying. However, Alex can't help but desire and protect Meg. He has almost no resistance to her. Meg is brave enough to risk her heart and her vulnerability and Alex's fierce loyalty and drive makes this novel a winner.

Highlander Unmarked-A Joyfully Recommended Title!!! February 8, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Alex MacLeod has perfected his disguise of hardened mercenary. His masquerade allows him to secretly work on behalf of his clan. Alex's undercover mission is nearing an end and is more dangerous than ever. But Alex's mission may be compromised by the lovely Meg Mackinnon.
When he saved Meg from bandits, Alex never imagined he'd see her again. Unfortunately for Alex's plan, Meg is at court also. Meg is searching for a strong husband to lead her clan. As a mercenary, Alex cannot be considered as a husband. Although Meg knows Alex isn't suitable, she cannot stop thinking about him. When Meg realizes Alex is not what he seems, she dares him to reveal his true self despite the risks to them both.
I had a horrible crush on Alex from Highlander Untamed. I just knew he'd be too delicious for words. He is! Virile, strong and handsome, I wanted to lick him all over. I can totally understand why Meg found him irresistible. I adore these Highlanders and want one of my own! Monica McCarty's Highlander Unmasked is chock full of suspense, political intrigue, passion, and romance. Highlander Unmasked is delightful!

Horrible writing January 12, 2008 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book has the same problem as her previous highlander books. there is too much prose, and too little dialog. She violates the first rule of fiction writing--she tells us rather than showing us.
Of course, Ms McCarty copyrighted 3 of these books in one year, so she must have written pretty fast.
It takes Jo Beverly at least a year to put out a book--Ms. Beverly spends time on historic detail and clearly rewrites things until the dialog and description are flawless.
Ms McCarty restates that same things over and over. When the heroine first sees the hero, she is struck by his piercing blue eyes. This happens twice more within a couple of pages. Each time the description is one that describes a first eye contact. The characters are pretty forgetful if they can have 3 first eye contacts in just 3 or 4 pages! Really, they seem awfully young to have Alzheimer's!
The metaphors are jarring: Example: "It didn't take long for the remaining ruffians to realize the futility of their endeavors. Scattering like bugs from beneath a rock, they fled." Bugs don't scatter from beneath a rock until someone turns the rock over. The "bugs" scattering here were a band of outlaws who attacked the heroine's traveling party--right out in the open. No one uncovered them or scared them out of a hiding place. The metaphor does not fit. What's wrong with saying something like, "Seeing they were outnumbered, the ruffians fled for their lives."
Phrases such as "futility of their endeavors" are awkward and trip up the flow of the story. Do you really think these outlaws thought to themselves, "This endeavor is futile. I think I will leave for a more promising endeavor"? No, they just fled. The language needs to be more visceral and direct. And shorter.
I quit the book about 1/3 of the way through. I was bored. Tlhere are so many good books, why waste my time?
