3 out of 5 stars mediocre at best   October 16, 2008

When I saw this book at a brick & mortar bookstore and quickly flipped through it, I thought it would be the perfect book for my 2.5 year-old son. He is a big fan of Little Bunny Follows His Nose (Scented Storybook) and this seemed to be similar, except more simple. It is easy for a younger child to follow along with. The story is short with a limited amount of text on each page. But after reading it with my son for the first time, I realized that the book is really not that well written and I found myself thinking I might have written a better book.

The illustrations are good (though not as nostalgic and sweet as "Little Bunny Follows His Nose) & the Halloween activites (getting dressed up in costumes, decorating the house, having a Halloween party, going trick-or-treating) were all Halloween things that I was wanting to introduce my child to. However, like I said, I found the writing in the book to just be, well, not that great. Instead of being creative, it's just cheesy. The scratch & sniff scents had potential (apples, pumpkin, berry punch, cookies, bubble gum & skunk). Unfortunately, the only one - in my copy anyway - that had a semi-strong scent besides the berry punch was the skunk. The skunk sticker was so overpowering that after one scratch, all of the stickers had a faint skunk scent which is not pleasant!

I had high hopes for this book, but sadly, I was disappointed. My son reaches for Clifford's Halloween more often.

4 out of 5 stars Cute book with one heck of a surprise ending odor.   October 18, 2007
My two-year-old loves this book, especially the pages with the scratch and sniff circles. However, not even he will scratch and sniff the "skunk smell" at the end of this book.

The story is simple. A boy and his family are preparing for a Halloween party and then a round of Trick-or-Treating. There are lots of nice smells in this book, though the cookie and pumpkin smells haven't really held up "scent-wise" when compared with the yummy apple, bubble-gum, and Halloween punch scents.

This scratch and sniff book has been a lot of fun for my family. The only off-putting odor was the "skunk" scent... but the story itself is unoffensive and really quite charming.

My 2 year old son received this from his Grandparent's recently...Just in time for Halloween! My husband and I were even excited about it, as it was a "different" kind of book, with the scratch & sniff smells inside. The story isn't too exciting, but the illustrations are nice. The smells range from "Wow, those really smell like apples!", to "OMG, did they really have to make the Skunk smell sooo bad?" :-/ When my Mother-in-Law caught a nose full of the Skunk smell on the last page, she even commented that she might have not purchased it if she had flipped through all the pages in the store and come across it then! All in all, we will add it to our Son's Halloween books...Even if we do have to skip the last stinky page!
