Product Description
From the New York Times bestseller Bertrice Small-first in an exhilarating new historical romance series

Adair Radcliffe is only a child when her family perishes in the War of the Roses, so her real father, the womanizing King Edward IV, takes her in, honoring his promise to her mother. Once Adair turns sixteen, the king marries her off without her knowledge-and to her later outrage- in a wedding by proxy. But when tragedy leaves her a widow twice over, Adair realizes that her already tenuous social position has sunk even lower. Now, all she can do is hope that the Scottish laird to whom she is sold will have mercy on her. But little does master or servant suspect that love knows no rank.

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous to say the least   November 27, 2008
This was my first Bertrice Small book and I have to say that it will be my last. The majority of the novel had to do with Adair's childhood, and her first two husbands, but the story didn't play well. The history was well researched, with only a few minor mistakes, but I felt as if I was plodding through this book. I have read similar novels in a day or two, and I greatly enjoy the fact that a writer can immerse me completely in a story, but it took me almost two weeks to actually finish it. Adair is hard to empathize with and the only time I felt sympathy was when Beiste was killed.
And Conal Bruce. I cannot even describe how much he made my skin crawl. His annoyingly repetitive endearment of "Honey Love" after every sentence was embarrassing, and it takes an awful writer to make a reader completely embarrassed for a character's word use.
The history was great, "Nursie" was great, even Andrew (her second husband if i recall) I rooted for. This was just a painful read for me, and I would definitely not reccomend it to anyone, ever.

5 out of 5 stars A Dangerous Love   August 2, 2008
Once again Bertirce Small writes a wonderful book. I have read all of her books and enjoyed everyone of them. A dangerous Love was a great book and as usual I get so wrapped up in the story I cannot put it down.

1 out of 5 stars Who is Bertice Small? Really??   July 29, 2008

I used to be a bit of a fan of 'Ms. Small' when she was writing the Sky O'Malley series. OK, I used to laugh at some of the 2oth century (at that time) made-up names she used for her heroines, and also at her many historical errors, but the writing style, by and large, ran smoothly. Every so often, though, there would be a book where the writing simply jarred. So my question is - how many writers are under the alias Bertrice Small? Because one of the really bad writers has produced A Dangerous Love.

If you want really good bodice-rippers, read Diana Gabaldon's books.

3 out of 5 stars An Admirable Herione   July 17, 2008

If you've never read a Bertrice Small romance, beware! She still writes the lengthy, alpha male-centered, history-filled romances popular in the late 70's, early 80's, not the shorter, sweeter versions common today.

True to Small's formula, Dangerous Love is about a strong-willed woman who has to search for love, and goes through a few men before she finds it. The reader follows Adair through her life as a child at court, to the Countess of Stanton, twice married, to a slave sold to a rough border laird. Through it all Adair is strong and handles the hurdles life throws at her with determination and pride.

Like many of Small's books it takes a long time for the heroine to meet her hero, and when she did, I was a little disappointed. Small described the passionate love between Adair and Conal, but as I reader I didn't really feel it. Also Conal had a tendency to appear stupid and childish, in what was almost a sexist interpretation of what an medieval man might be.

Although those sound like harsh criticisms, this book was still good. I loved the historical details, down to how the women made soaps, clothes, and prepared meals. The secondary characters were also wonderful, especially Adair's nurse Elsbeth and her "Uncle Dickon," King Richard. Dangerous Love might be too drawn out for some readers, but I found the detail refreshing and well-researched. The characters behaved how they would in their time period, not like modern-day people transported to the past. A keeper
