Amazon.com Review Asked why the writing of the My Side of the Mountain trilogy took Jean Craighead George more than 40 years, she responds, "My mother disapproved of sequels. 'Those are trashy books,' she told me when I was a child. So I grew up and did not write them. "But kids are wiser than adults, I learned. Letters kept arriving from schools and homes, saying, 'We want to know more about Sam, Frightful, and the wilderness.' 'Sequels,' they said, 'are important.' They were right." Now, all three of George's remarkable novels about the wilderness adventures of young Sam Gribley and his falcon, Frightful, are available in one handsome volume. In My Side of the Mountain, a Newbery Honor Book, Sam leaves home to fend for himself in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. For a year he lives in a hollowed-out tree, befriending animals and depending on his wits for survival. In the sequel, On the Far Side of the Mountain, Sam's sister has now joined him, and his falcon is confiscated by a conservation officer. Frightful's Mountain is an interesting departure for George. Written from the perspective of Frightful the falcon, the concluding novel in the trilogy follows her efforts to learn to depend on her own instincts in a world crawling with dangers. Jean Craighead George is the beloved author of more than 80 books, including the Newbery Medal winner, Julie of the Wolves. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Product Description In 1959, Jean Craighead George published My Side of the Mountain. This coming-of-age story about a boy and his falcon went on to win a Newbery Honor, and for the past forty years has enthralled and entertained generations of would-be Sam Gribleys. The two books that followed--On the Far Side of the Mountain and Frightful's Mountain--were equally extraordinary. Now all three books are available in one deluxe yet affordable volume for veteran devotees and brand-new fans alike.

OKay November 7, 2008 I think this book would not be good for young children because they might try to be like Sam and run away from home. Besides that it was a very good book and I liked it a lot. I thought that Sam was a very inspiring character, and if someone did try to live off the land they might learn a lot from that book that would be helpful.I would not mind reading that book again at all because it was so good.
bonding book September 19, 2008 What a great trilogy. I have been reading this to my nine year old son who is obsessed with survivor and surviVAL. The vocabulary is alittle over his head (and mine). I find myself reading with a dictionary next to us. We now do falcon cries to each other around the house:) We have been reading well past his bedtime. Recommended to readers 8-108 years old!
My Side of the Mountain Trilogy March 28, 2008 I read this book as a child. Reading this book as an adult brought the inner child back to life. I think everyone thinks of ditching society one time or another. I don't think I could live on Sam's diet or live in the hollow of a tree in real life, but through out the story you feel as if you did. Very few books today can actually make you feel a part of the story. The book also tells which plants are edible in the wild. This book should be recommended for every child to read. So much to learn in it about nature, falcons, plants, and survival itself. Great book.
excellent January 18, 2008 this is an excellent story about a boys' survival on his own and his relationship with animals and the environment. I have been reading these to my 8 year old son and he loves them. He wants to be a falconer when he grows up!
I bought this for my 23 year old son for Christmas...... January 13, 2008 he used to watch the original movie when he was a kid, over and over again. He's been away from home for a few years, working on a ski slope in CO, so I wanted to send him a bit of 'home'. I know it's a kid's book, but he said he really enjoyed it, and has read it several times. It brought back lots of memories. It's been a story that has stayed with our family for almost 20 years now!
