Amazon.com Review
The Beauty of the Beast : Poems from the Animal Kingdom is a stunning collection of poems celebrating "the beauty and wonder of the animal kingdom." Poet and anthologist Jack Prelutsky has chosen 200 works by 123 poets from Carl Sandburg to Seamus Heaney, with a tip of the hat to his own "The Multilingual Mynah Bird." Not surprising for someone who grew up near the Bronx Zoo, Prelutsky has arranged the poems into five zoological classifications. The vibrant watercolor illustrations for this book were created by Meilo So, a brilliant Hong Kong-born artist. A welcome anthology for poetry lovers, watercolor enthusiasts, and children's book collectors alike. (Ages 8 and older)

Product Description
First published in 1997 and unavailable for three years, this ALA Notable Book of 200 poems for animal lovers is now being reissued with a price lowered from $22.95 to $19.95. Culled by Jack Prelutsky from the works of more than 100 highly acclaimed poets of the twentieth century, here is a poetic parade of the animal kingdom that ranges from the lowly earthworm to the majestic whale and just about every creature in between. Some of the poems are playful and funny; others are insightful and thoughtful--but all are brief and fun to read aloud. Whether by Ogden Nash or Seamus Heaney, William Carlos Williams or Marianne Moore, the striking images of each poem are captured in the deft brushstrokes, sure sense of color, and lyrical compositions of Meilo So, a brilliant young watercolorist. The Beauty of the Beast is a big, joyous book offering lasting value. Altogether, it is a beautiful gift for the whole family to treasure, grow with, and cherish. Complete with author and title indexes.

5 out of 5 stars Niece Loves It!   November 18, 2008
I bought this last Christmas for my four-year-old niece. She loves the pictures and the poems are fun and interesting. I'm hoping this is just another step for her toward appreciating and loving the natural world.

This book is worth it for the "Bumble Bee" poem on page 6 alone but the end page art is also incredible. The poets are very eclectic ranging from Margaret Wise Brown of "Goodnight Moon" fame to Ted Hughes and D.H. Lawrence! This is a wonderful book for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Pictures and Words form a Lyrical Feast   January 19, 2000

Jack Prelutsky continues to prove that he cannot be pigeon-holed into the role of simply a poet. In his role as editor of yet another poetry anthology with the publication of The Beauty of the Beast, Prelutsky has once again chosen poems that fit with and enhance the book's overall theme. Children will be delighted with the variety of poetic genres exhibited here--from the sublime to the hillarious. Meilo So's pictures form a charming backdrop to these poems, and each section of the book features a beautifully lyric haiku written by Prelutsky. This book is truly a feast for any poetry lover and would enhance anyone's personal or classroom library.

Nobody ever collected animals together like Noah. Nobody ever collected animal poems like Jack Prelutsky. The Beauty of the Beast is a winner with great animal poems that appeal to all ages. If you like animals, you'll love these animal poems, and may even find yourself liking poetry too. We did.
