5 out of 5 stars Sleeping Ugly   June 7, 2008
This little read is one of the best illustrations to portray the importance of character. To much emphasis is given today on outward appearance. As vessels, it really is what is on the inside - character - that matters. Glenda Hotton

5 out of 5 stars Sleeping Ugly - An Enjoyable Twist   May 17, 2008
The story by well respected and prolific children's author, Jane Yolen comes the tale of a spoiled princess, Miserella. Miserella can't find beauty or pleasure in anything. She's just a nasty princess.

And then there is Plain Jane, who definitely wouldn't win any beauty pageants. Also the story has a fairy who grants wishes, a sleeping spell and a kindly prince. But,the prince is the youngest son, so he has no castle or wealth to offer. He realized Jane is a wonderful person, inside and out, bestows a kiss, she wakes up and they live happily ever after. (The decided to let Princess Miserella stay asleep since nothing made her happy anyway.)

I sell books on Amazon, but I also delight by a good story. I won't be selling this one. I will pass it on to a young friend who will enjoy reading it.

Another successful tale for Yolen.

5 out of 5 stars fairy tales   February 26, 2008
Sleeping Ugly

reviewed by Jamie - A Stockbridge Central School third grader

Sleeping Ugly (Plain Jane) was ugly on the outside and pretty on the inside. Princess Miserella was pretty on the outside but mean on the inside. The Prince is from a castle. A fairy godmother gives Plain Jane three wishes and Miserella gets angry and stomps her foot at the fairy godmother. The fairy turns her foot to stone. Plain Jane uses a wish to undo the spell. It happens again and finally the fairy godmother gets so angry she casts a spell to put Miserella to sleep. But it reflects and hits all three. It was funny when the man kissed sleeping ugly then asked what her name was.
I liked the book because it was silly and enjoyable because Sleeping Ugly was ugly and the prince was ugly too. I recommend this book to people who like funny things.

Sleeping Ugly

Are you tired of the same old fairy tales told over and over again? Here is one with a new twist... Sleeping ugly is about a really pretty princess on the outside but on the inside she is the meanest wickedest princes. Plain Jane is Ugly on the outside and really nice on the inside. I like this book because it has adventure and excitement. It is funny because Plain Jane is ugly and nice and Princes Miserella is pretty and mean. I recommend this book to first to third grade.

5 out of 5 stars A model story   January 22, 2007
A well told story, and and a good model for my students' essay writing. It has organization, allusion, "show me" character, smooth seamless transitions between scenes, and a bonus character lesson suitable for both boys & girls. For a longer "chapter book" with the same theme, see M.M. Kaye's The Ordinary Princess.
