 Couldn't Put it Down! October 25, 2008
After finishing a rather lackluster book on the Highlands by another author, I picked up "On a Highland Shore" and was mesmerized from page one and couldn't put it down! Plenty of reviewers here have told the tale so there's no need for me to repeat what's already been written, except those five star reviews are accurate for a change. I've just ordered all of Givens books, and look forward to reading more from this author who doesn't underestimate the intelligence of her reader.
 A Near Miss...Almost But Not Quite July 28, 2008
Margaret MacDonald is betrothed to Lachlan Ross, a wealthy landowner and cousin to Scotland's King Alexander III. She is excited to begin her new life and move away from her family and the responsibilities of caring for all of her little brothers. But Margaret's dreams are not to be. What awaits her is a nightmare of death, destruction and betrayal. Her home is destroyed and her family murdered, one of her brothers lives but has been taken hostage. Margaret is determined to find him.
I was a bit disappointed by the story-telling and the writing. They weren't awful but they weren't terrific either. I wanted to be moved by the emotions of the characters and I just wasn't.
The story itself wasn't bad. There's a lot of history and long list of characters but they just didn't come to life for me. I found the writing style a bit stiff. I really wanted to like this book but it just didn't do it for me.
 Higland Saga July 17, 2008
Poor Margaret MacDonald. The oldest daughter of Laird MacDonald she's been betrothed since birth to a man she hoped to love, only to find him in her best friend's bed days before their wedding. She humiliates herself and her family by pleading with the king to nullify her engagement, and returns home shamed, only find that her family has been killed and her home burned by Norse raiders.
Enter Gannon MacMagnus. He's a half-Irish, half-Norse warrior with only a ship to his name. After Ireland suffers the same brutal attacks Gannon and a few warriors sail to Scotland to warn others and gain information, but they find they are too late.
With nothing to lose, Margaret joins Gannon in his quest to discover who is leading the marauders, and to find her little brother who was kidnapped in the raid.
I truly enjoyed this book. It begins slower than most traditional romance novels, and occasionally reads like historical fiction, but the characters are wonderfully developed, and Givens pulls you into the period easily. It is tamer than most romances, so a definite read for someone who is looking for an engaging story, not just a steamy romance.
Great Read! Was Sad to Finish It July 16, 2008
This is a book with plenty of action, memorable characters, and evocative prose. I was so involved with the characters, I was saddened when I finished the book. Not only was the writing excellent, but the historical facts were accurate and well-blended in with the story. I was learning a great deal of Scottish and Irish history while I was enjoying the story. I felt I was actually there amongst the Vikings and the Highland Scots.
Kathleen Givens leaves a couple of major threads hanging that I hope will be tied up in subsequent books. What happened to Davy? I don't remember that question being answered in the sequel. I would also like to see a book dealing with Nell's story. There was an interesting scene where Nell meets her soul-mate, but after that short scene is over, we never see him again in the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this well written historical novel which is full of such detail that all of the characters came to life for me, immediately. In 1263, on Scotland's western shore, the village of Somerstrath is invaded by Vikings who murder, pillage and plunder, showing no mercy to anyone. A lucky handful who had been absent from the village at the time, return to find a smoking village and the bodies of old and young, cruelly slain. Beautiful Margaret MacDonald, elder daughter of the local Laird was one of the fortunate few, along with her sister and even though this was a shattering event, the King refuses to release her from her marriage contract with a man she despises. A huge, gorgeous hunk of an Irish/Norseman, Gannon MacMagnus, gives her hope of avenging her family and of finding the whereabouts of the only other surviving member of her family, a young brother who had been captured to be sold into slavery. It's an action packed read with some tender love scenes and I found it to be a most satisfying read.
