always a pleasure with this author April 7, 2008 Being an avid reader of Bertrice Small I must say this book did not disapoint me. She always finds the right balance in her books so that when I pick up one I can't put it down. Keep the tissues on hand and be ready for a shocking surprise or two.
One of her best, not a typical romance novel March 13, 2008 One of Bertrice Small's earliest books (originally published in 1978), "The Kadin" is a beautiful historical novel that is intricate and involving all the way through. Unlike most romance novels, this one is very thin on graphic bedroom scenes--only 3 or 4 in the entire 441 pages. But that's great since Small fills up all that space with lots of plot and Eastern court intrigue. Janet/Cyra, Firousi, Sarina, and Zuleika all make their mark on the story and on the reader, and it's a fascinating glimpse into what the private lives and motivations of Selim I and Suleiman/Suleyman the Great might have been. Small weaves her fictional characters together with well-known historical events and people so seamlessly that they come fully to life. This was the first Bertrice Small book I read, and since the first time I read it more than 15 years ago, I continue to revisit this story regularly (I read my first copy so many times that it fell apart and I had to buy a new one). The relationship with Lord Hay is a bit disturbing to me given how it began, but it is sort of a staple of your typical "bodice-ripper" romance, and that is really the only typical romance novel bit about the entire book. The romance in the rest of the book is truly romantic, given to the reader more through thought and feeling than steamy bedroom scenes. To my mind, it's still the best of Small's novels and I highly recommend the book, particularly to those who might be dissatisifed with Small's most recent novels.
surprise unique romance February 3, 2008 Small has the most creative way to introduce us to harem living by a young scotish girl. Her adventure to a new land and culture will keep you turning the pages. I have read this book over and over it is such an excellent, entertaining read. Full of suspense and love the ending is a absolute winner. Treat yourself to something different in romance stories. Small has written a book that should be a movie. Five stars. How I wish this story was on CD.

Just okay. However, I could hardly call it a novel; it focused more on politics of Ottoman Empire, rather than on love or romance. Sometimes Small creates unreal situations which you know for sure would never happen in real life. Small simply "eliminates" people that are not needed in the novel anymore. Regarding this particular book, all brothers of Suleyman die of smallpox, but Suleyman is nice and healthy. Why? Because he is to be the heir which was decided at the time he was born! So he must not die, but all other brothers (7 or 8) must die somehow (well, smallpox was used as the cause)not to start a war with him for the throne. Funny, uh. I think if you are writer of fictitious novels, you must try to make your fiction sound as much real as possible. Otherwise, there is always a thought in the back of your head like "Yeah, this is just a fiction, nothing else..."

This is the best B. Small book I've read. It's also one of my favorite books of all time and i've read it more times than I can count. Anyone who loves romance at all should get this book!
