5 out of 5 stars So good I remember it years after the fact   November 7, 2008
I don't know exactly what it is, but this book (and this trilogy) is so good that I remember loving it almost 15 years after reading it! The review by ellejir "ellejir" is right on.

5 out of 5 stars My Heart is Aflame from this read   September 30, 2008
Kristen Haadrad is a beautiful tall viking woman, she is strong in her will and when her older brother Selig and his crew decide to leave on a summer voyage on their fathers ship to trade in other cities, Kristen decides that she is going with them, even if she has to sneak onto the ship.
When her brother discovers her in the cargo hold he is furious, but he won't take her back since they are already too far from home. Things don't end up going exactly as Kristen thought they would, they weren't going where she thought they were, and when they end up captured and forced into hard labor by the Saxons, Kristen finds herself overwhelmed and desperate to keep the Saxons in the dark on the fact that she is female, but when the handsome Lord Royce discovers her for the beautiful woman that she is, will she be able to ignore the passion that his face and body reveal when he looks at her? And will he be able to deny himself the beautiful viking that he tries so hard to hate?

I really enjoyed this book, it is by far one of my favorites of Lindsey's. I really enjoy stories of captives, and she really does a wonderful job with this story both Kristen and Royce are very likeable and captivating characters. This book does not lack passion in anyway. I strongly recommend this read. :)

4 out of 5 stars A classic of the romance genre!   August 21, 2008
This was my first Lindsey book which I read 21 years ago when I was 16, and I still rank it as one of my all-time favorites in the historical romance genre. Kristen Haardrad is one of the feisteist heroines in romance and has plenty of fire to stoke the desires of the Saxon lord Royce of Wyndhurst. Both characters are likable and have depth which makes this an enjoyable read - Royce is conflicted by his hatred of the Vikings [who had caused the death of his beloved fiancee years ago] and his intense desire and eventual love for the strong-willed Viking hellion, Kristen.

This is the book that introduced me to the romance genre decades ago, and though I haven't kept up with most of Ms Lindsey's later works [I found her earlier novels to be much better plotted - check out Fires of Winter which is the story of Kristen's parents, Brenna and Garrick], I recommend this author to those who love historical romances.

1 out of 5 stars Nope...   July 18, 2008

If you like books that have the same conversations over and over and the same situations over and over... this is for you. I was very dissapointed with this book. I kept reading and reading hoping it would get better. Please don't waste your time on this.

4 out of 5 stars One of her best...   June 27, 2008
I read this at least 20 years ago. Wow Johanna Lindsey sure could write then. I think this was the first book of hers that I read. It's a really fun, absorbing read. She had some other home runs as well with her earlier work, but all her more recent books are much tamer... and boring. Stick with her early work !!! I wish the author would return to her roots.
