Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! May 20, 1999 This book is about a father who takes his child owling for the first time and how special the child feels about being old enough to do such an outing with Dad. Jane Yolen captures the wonder of a night walk in the woods.
FINALLY, an accurate, inspiring, outdoor fun childrens' book May 12, 1999 I love this book...the first time I read it, I cried. I am an environmental educator and have used it several times in my owl programs. Adults love it just as much as children. It was a great introduction to owling for my 3 year old niece. I brought her out one night into the woods and we hooted for owls. Amazingly enough, "her friend, the owl" hooted back (her father was hiding in the woods!). The whole walk back through the dark and the snow, she kept looking up at me with utter adoration, telling me, "THANKS, Debbie!". This book will touch you.
My All Time Favorite November 13, 1998 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
OWL MOON is my favorite book... but I have to admit that I am far from unbiased. I am the little girl in this book, my father is "Pa" and my mother is Jane Yolen, the author. I have always loved this story, even before it was a book, because it is the story of my childhood with my real life bird watching father. Now, as a mother, it is even more special since I read it to my 3 year old daughter Maddison Jane. Last month, Maddison went, for the first time, into our back yard with my Dad and called to the owls with him. Thank you Mommy for writing this book. Thank you Daddy for teaching me about birds and all of nature. And thank you both for sharing this story with all readers.
Heartwarming text, magical illustrations--a classic February 6, 1998 This is among our favorites, both on our bookshelf and as a gift for little friends. The text is heartwarming, the illustrations magical. Our son, now 3, begs to hear this night after night (one friend swore she read it every night for years), and it's wonderful for teaching children about owls and other night creatures (the pages are full of them). No daytime walk among trees now is complete without our son peering up into branches looking for a great horned owl.
Appeals to children and adults on many levels December 13, 1997 I have 3 children and have purchased and read literally hundreds of childrens books. This is one of my all time favorites. It will appeal to both the child and the adult reader as one seems able to relate to this story of a child with his father in the woods in many ways. The child-father relationship, appreciation and the mystery of nature, how simple things in life are what we remember and cherish,hope,love...its all there in this great little story. This book will invoke memories and emotions as you read it.
