Ok. If you are looking for a novel like Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series you will not find it here. While Alex is an honourable and strong highland warrior, just like Jamie, the story has little comparison to Outlander. This is not a time travel, the humour is not so bold, the violence is not so graphic, it is not nearly as complex and it contains no magic in the literal sense. By it's own standards though it is a fantastic story. The first half of the book is a pleasant romance. I would not have thought this book would become a 5 star book but the middle picked up and the ending was fabulous.
This book does not contain any graphic sex. If you like that in your romance novels then you should probably look elsewhere. I find it quite a refreshing change. The love that the two characters share is wonderfully drawn. The author doesn't just tell you but shows you. At times the dialogue is a little bit repetitive but it is very romantic. It's beautiful and real.
Once the couple returns to Scotland the book really takes off. The setting and plot are richly drawn and you feel like you're part of the story. There is deceit, politics, romance, mystery and war and it just keeps getting better and better. I have never read a story where the ending has kept me so enthralled. I often feel like I just want to get a book over with but it wasn't the case with this one. I didn't skip a sentence or chapter. The only reason that this isn't a 5 star book is that people are expecting a 10 star like Diana Gabaldon's books. If you take this on it's own merits and don't compare the two then it is a 5 star for me. Maybe more. I cried my little eyes out and that is very rare for me. Thank heavens I had the second book handy. What a beautiful story!

This is a historical romance, plain and simple, with below average dialog between the characters. There is good description of setting and the historical context of the times, but the plot is uninteresting. The main characters lack complexity and depth. I had enough interest to finish it, curious about one story line with a villainous brother, but there was no resolution. There was a set-up to read the next book in the series, which I have little interest to do.
Disappointed August 16, 2008
After reading the high praise for this book I was disappointed. The writing is fair and while the story line works for the first part of the book one soon realizes that many plot points are really for an upcoming book. As this was a first novel by this author I thought that it would stand on it's own but ***SPOILER*** when I got to the end I was right in my suspicion that this was all set up for a second book. I love series and don't have a problem with plot points scattered as seeds for upcoming works but usually those books stand on their own and have a conclusion on their own. After the first part (noted as such), it's all set up for the sequel. When I don't race to finish a book but feel that "I might as well since I'm half way through" it's not a good sign.
Not what I'd hoped for... August 15, 2008
As a Gabaldon and Donati reader, I looked forward to reading this historical novel. There was no history. There was too much monotonous romance. The characters were flat and uninteresting after about 100 pages. I wish I hadn't bought the next book in the Kilgannon series when I bought this book. It read like a dime store romance novel.

I loved the first part of this book, I enjoyed reading how Mary Lowell and Kilgannon meet, and I found it amusing and passionate. But, then in the 2nd part of the book I found it really dragged, and much of their life was glossed over and it seemed a bit hurried to me without the depth that was in the first half of the book. Still, I'll read the sequel, though I agree, this is a pale cry compared to Gabaldon's writing, but not bad for a diversion.
