4 out of 5 stars Lady of the Manor   April 12, 2008

Hamish MacBeth is almost to the church when his intended does a bunk. DEATH OF A GENTLE is M.C. Beaton's fourteenth in a series filled with characters who keep the pace moving. Will he have to leave his beloved village and become a "cop on the beat" is a question. Hamish will do anything to remain in Lochdubh even to having the bands posted.
His keen deductive skills attract the attention of a Russian Inspector who wants to jump his bones as they work to discover who killed the impostor as well as her employer.
Light, funny and familiar as the gossip spreads.
Nash Black, author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS and SINS OF THE FATHERS.

When an author creates a character that's so appealing, with all the human emotions and foibles and the ability to bumble into solutions to murders and crimes, it is mandatory that the series continue on and on. Such a protagonist is Hamish Macbeth, the constable in the sleepy village of Lochdubh, Scotland. This novel is the 23rd, and it is still as fresh and entertaining as the first.

In Gentle Lady, Hamish encounters a recent resident to "his" town who is much adored by the people for her sedate manner and promises of donations, for example, for a new church roof. Hamish, in performing his perceived duties, pays her a welcome visit and apparently antagonizes her for some reason he can't fathom. As a result, she undertakes a strong effort to get his one-man police station closed.

In an effort to stay in his beloved village, Hamish blunders his way into a foolish situation. Then two murders take place, giving him the opportunity once again to prove himself.

A delight to read.

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful and pleasant mystery from Beaton   April 6, 2008

Since reading the first Hamish McBeth mystery I have not missed one. And this is one of the best. Hamish in the Highlands, searching for the bad guy, trying to find love...and of course always bothered by the porcine Blair. Please keep writting these MC Beaton!

4 out of 5 stars Keep Hamish coming, Ms. Beaton.   March 30, 2008
Hamish is at his laconic best in this book. He gets involved with a Turkish girl whose visa has run out, and offers to marry her in order to help keep her in the country. When the tall blonde goes missing on her wedding day, Hamish knows that trouble has found its way again to Lochdubh. Hamish is one of my very favourite sleuths, and Ms. Beaton never disaappoints with each new book. Tall, lanky and intelligent Hamish is pure delight. He is so real that I have to keep reminding myself that I'm reading fiction. This book has lots of murder and mayhem, and of course Hamish's two love interests are there to keep things interesting. Love the books, love the characters and absolutely love the setting. Lochdubh seems to be such a lovely place! But it's certainly never dull there.

What can I say, I can't wait until another MC Beaton comes out. Be it Hamish or Agatha they both are enjoyable reading. Not too long and easy to curl up with.
