5 out of 5 stars Dirty, filthy, rauncy....oh so good.   April 28, 2006

I read certain paragraphs of this book more than once. It's one of those stories that makes your mind stop for a second and think, "did I really just read that?" Those are the interesting novels. Craig doesn't stand in one place to long while writing, which makes you use your noggin to keep up. This is a very refreshing book with unique and interesting characters (sometimes we learn more than we care to about them). If you like Craig Ferguson, you will like this book. It is very easy to picture him writing the lines without any restrictions. Bravo, Mr. Ferguson, on your debut novel.

1 out of 5 stars Don't need more White bashing   April 24, 2006

Heard his interview with Terri Gross on NPR. She read an excerpt which was probably a paragraph. In that one paragraph, there were several disparaging remarks made about Whites - more or less painting Whites as somewhere between stupid or evil. We get enough of that these days for free - I see no reason to pay for it. I like Craig, or I thought I did.....

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful First Novel!   April 24, 2006

In an often-times brilliant novel, filled to the brim with stories and characters--both real and imagined--Mr Ferguson has created one of the most clever and witty novels of the past decade. Bravo to an extraordinary talent! As a reader, you will be tested at times, as you are introduced to many criss-crossing persona and their stories, as well as dreams and counter-dreams; religiousity; pieces of France, Scotland, and the USA; and the ever present Carl Jung!

The novel abounds in whimsy. It somehow promotes a belief in miracles and/or faith while at the same time lambasts the church with right-on satire. The key word in this review is CLEVER, as you will find delight in his skill as a writer.

Alas, the end is somewhat muted and a little flat, but nonetheless the novel sparkles. And, lo and behold!, it requires at least one additional reading. This good stuff grows on you!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book   April 21, 2006

I am a Craig Ferguson, host of LLS on CBS, fan. This is another side of him shown in this book. He admits that some of the experiences that his character have, are things that happened to him. He is a superb author and I enjoyed reading the Advanced Readers Copy of this book and I now have read the finished products. It is well worth the money. It isn't cheeky monkies, it is a rare look at real adult type problems, dealing with everyday life, a search for the source life or the devine being, as well as how it/he/she effects our lives. It gives us an intospective about our own lives and our own outlook on life.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Brilliant   April 19, 2006

Ferguson has crafted what is, simply, the wildest, most hilarious ride I've had the pleasure to read in ages. A little Carl Hiassen, a dash of Hunter Thompson... but comparisons do little justice to this magnificent opus. It is a singular, riotous, bit of work. Nobody is spared: Religion, vanity, showbiz, sex -- it's all target practice for Ferguson, and his rapier wit. It's not a book for the timid.

I can't remember laughing out loud so often, while reading a book. This is a true gem.
