1 out of 5 stars How could such an unfunny book be written by such a funny man?!!   June 5, 2007

I just want to preface this by saying that I am a big fan of Craig Ferguson on the Late Late Show; he is a really funny guy. And I enjoy humorous books on the lines of Bill Bryson, Peter Mayle, PG Wodehouse etc. So when I picked up this book I was really looking forward to some good laughs on a long flight.

Well, I tried, I really did. I slogged through several chapters before giving up and skimming to the end (which I never usually do), and wound up throwing it in a trashcan (really can't remember ever doing that before either) before my next connecting flight. What a disappointment! He is obviously capable of making a good turn of phrase, but so many of the intended funny parts just didn't make it; you could see that they could have been funny, but just landed flat because they were missing something. And I never really got interested in, let alone attached to any of the characters. I really don't understand what the reviewers liked about it; it was just plain non-engaging, boring and unfunny. And if there was a plot, he was taking a darn long time getting to it.

It goes down as one of the worst books I've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars A great, fun read   May 29, 2007

This book is fun, witty and inteligent. Craig's skill presents ideas and views that are refreshing and worldly.

3 out of 5 stars Masturbating Ferguson   May 18, 2007

Ferguson's weak and annoying attempts at being clever grate. The turn of a phrase fine, but go somewhere with it and stop congratulating yourself on your attempts at wit. If you want real wit, wisdom and cutting-edge character insight, buy Irving Welsh - whom Ferguson is obviously trying to emulate. Nice try.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe a bit over the top for some!   May 14, 2007

This book is a great read, if you don't take yourself too seriously. It is witty and comical, however, it contains some graphic sexual descriptions, which some may find a bit over the top. I enjoyed the book and in fact hated to see the story(ies) end. It is a mixture of comedy and tragedy all rolled into one. The characters will grow on you, even if in the beginning you're not sure you like them. I'm not sure how Mr. Ferguson brought it all together, but he did. I think Steve Martin would probably describe it as "a wild & crazy read."

5 out of 5 stars Wow, what an entertaining work   May 12, 2007

I loved this book. Ferguson is a talented comedic voice who must be well educated and well traveled. As advertised, the book is an adventure in the sacred and the profane. And damned funny (obviously "damned" too, if you are an easily offended Christian). I am recommending it to all my most open-minded friends.
