5 out of 5 stars Great Book!   July 16, 2007

I almost didn't buy this book because I wasn't sure that tips on donkeys in an English countryside would apply to donkeys in our southwest desert climate, but this book is wonderful! I am enjoying reading it, it is written in such a nice style and has lots of helpful tips. It doesn't take for granted that you already have knowledge about other equines, so it's a wonderful book for a first-time equine owner.

2 out of 5 stars Not helpful for real ranchers & US donkey owners   July 9, 2007

I read the reviews & thought this would be a great book, but I was mistaken. This UK author treats donkeys like French Poodles. We live on a ranch in Texas and our donkeys live on acreage along with goats and cattle. We don't import donkeys from Ireland, and we don't care about registered donkeys, and we don't show them. Many of the things discussed in this book are ridiculous for a farm animal. Here in Texas donkeys are a preferred guard animal for goats because of their intelligence, caring nature, and hatred for coyotes (they kick them in the head when the dog isn't looking). I will say that the author's assessment of donkey personalities is accurate and they are intelligent, charming, social animals. They do love human attention and to be groomed and given treats. But for actual care of donkeys, a book more like the way the Storey folks write their animal care books would be more useful.

This is a clasic little book. Once you have read this book you will never underestimate the humble donkey again! They are the giant amongst Equines. A great book for adults and children alike.

Typical of my husband and me, we got the donkey first, then looked in to care of the animal. I found this resource very helpful, and one we will refer to often. I'm glad I purchased this book.
