Even if your water tastes fine, I believe you'll still notice an improvement in the taste of your coffee using a fresh filter at the recommended intervals (2 months).

This is one of those items you think you'll remember to replace when you purchase your coffee maker and then, three years later, realize you're still using the original filter. Amazon makes purchase of the filters easy (you cannot find them readily in retail stores), and the replacement makes a great difference in the taste of your fresly-brewed coffee.

As with most custom water filters, this one is expensive. Basically, it's the same marketing strategy as for printer cartridges. The printer is cheap; the ink will kill you.
